A Disguised Miracle As I’m sitting on the bus, on my way to Red Bank Regional High School halfway through sophomore year, I began to think what brought me here. Here I am, a boy of 15 who went to private school his whole life and now is attending a public school, not knowing a single soul. All I could think about was, â€Å"What brought me here†. Let me take you back about a year from sophomore year. It was the day before Valentine s Day; I remember because I got into a discussion about getting my mom Valentine’s Day flowers with my dentist. Earlier that day at Red Bank Catholic, I was joking around with a frenemy, making jokes with each other about each of us having our own hit list, in religion class no less. Like most things, I tend to have taken it too far and attached the whole stupid idea to my world domination plan (an inside joke), discussing the whole thing with my best friend at lunch. Little did I think about who might overhear me, or that my friend’s friend whom I disliked, and made no secret of it, was sitting right beside her. To my surprise, he next day I was called to the principal s office where I was informed that I was suspended, with the possibility of being expelled. I felt the whole world crashing down on me, as if it was sucked up into a black hole never again to be able to see the light. Family Traditions Essay It was going to be a bad Christmas. Nothing could be done to salvage it. The little tree (the only one we could afford) was bare, surrounded by its fallen needles. The Christmas presents were not much; Santa did not have the means to give the children what they had on their Christmas lists. It was going to be awful, the season of joy and giving was corrupted, nothing in the tiny apartment even resembled Christmas. The little, dead, bare Christmas tree was prophesying what the season would really bring that year to the family, almost nothing. How could they save the holiday? It seemed almost hopeless, but it turned into my family’s most loved and fun family ritual. To this day, I cannot remember a Christmas morning where Santa did not fill the entire living room floor with balloons. Every Christmas morning my family wakes up to a jungle of balloons; long skinny ones that look like baseball bats, the regular round ones, some that have a special design on the rubber, and others that are so tiny we do not notice them until we hear a big bang when we accidently step on them. This Christmas tradition is the one that saved Christmas back when I was really young. My parents, in an effort to save the holiday, had rushed to the local corner store and bought some balloons. The balloons were cheap, took a long time to blow up, and made that Christmas and every Christmas after that so much more exciting and fun than if my parents had been able to afford all the gifts we had on our list to Santa that year. I have always known that spending time with your family is important, but I never had a testimony of its importance in my life. When I read the words â€Å"wholesome family recreation† in the Proclamation to the Family, it surprised me. I want to better understand why the Lord would have us spend time together so that I can strengthen my testimony of â€Å"wholesome family recreation.† I have to admit that this is an aspect of family life that I have never developed a â€Å"testimony† in. The experience listed above has touched my life deeply, but it never struck me as a way to help my family grow. Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, â€Å"We know that the Lord operates through families. He himself lives in the family unit; it is his eternal system of government in heaven and on earth, and he always offers as much of his own system to men as they are willing to receive† (McConkie, p.35). What a wonderful thought! Families are so amazing, they are pieces of heaven and visions of eternity that we can experience here on earth, given to us from our Heavenly Father. Since families are such an important asset in this life it is vital for us that we learn to appreciate them and to utilize the time we have together. Adler said that â€Å"the most fundamental human need is to belong† (Albert and Popkin, p.18). We can show our families how much they mean to us and how much we need them in our life by spending time with them, getting to know each individual and compromising for each other. According to Wolin and Bennett family rituals are â€Å"vital to the life of the healthy family† (Wolin and Bennett, p. 407). When we take the time to plan and accomplish family recreation, we make that experience more special and meaningful because we, as a family, chose to spend time togther. Opportunities like this give the family a closeness that is deeper than love, it makes a family that likes one another and enjoys the other members. When parents and siblings take time out of their lives to go on a vacation or participate in family prayer it shows the other members of the family that they are more important than a job, school work, or friends. Some family scholars have used the term â€Å"metaphor† when describing aspects of family rituals (Imber-Black, et al) because the effect of the ritual is more then just â€Å"hanging out† together. The time that we take eating meals as a unity, praying with one voice, and sharing weekly activities invite the spirit into that house. The house that makes time for each other is that house that appears to welcome its members. In a home the overwhelming feeling is love because the members have to sacrifice for the other members in the family. In the text for this class there is a subtitle in chapter 11 called â€Å"self-sacrifice,† it talks about how we have to sacrifice for a successful family (Dollahite, p.158). When we sh are daily, weekly, and yearly traditions it is a way for us to show the other members in our family that we are willing to sacrifice for them. My mom never buys anything for herself because she would rather her children have more than her. This visible giving of self by my mother has made me love her and appreciate me more because it shows me that I am special to her. My dad always (well, almost always) eats dinner with us. He is a lawyer and a bishop and he does not have much free time. Nevertheless, he puts off work so that he can spend those few minutes with his children. His sacrifice of time shows me how much he truly cares about my family because he is willing to stop and eat with us. When we look back on the times that we have spent in wholesome family recreation the experiences are usually more cheerful and optimistic. The rituals provide a reservoir of goodwill, unity, trust, and confidence. They make the world resemble a more comfortable place because it gives us a place where we fit in. (Burr, et al., p.332) Looking back to when I was growing up I got into many fights with my little siblings and my parents, but when I remember the times that we planned to spend together most of my memories are happy, energizing ones. I know that I did not grow up in the perfect household, but when we stopped to spend time together and enjoy one another’s presence it helped build felicitous memories. Wholesome family recreation does not have to include every member of the family, the text says that it involves two or more members of the family (Dollahite, p.197). Over the Christmas holiday I made it a point to spend individual time with each of my siblings (all five) because it is one of my goals to always remain close to them. We sat and planned our activity together, got all the things we needed to prepare, and then spent the day together. I had a picnic with my sister, I bowled with my brother, and I got to know more about them. Meredith and colleagues said that family rituals â€Å"encourage contact between family members, in a relaxed, enjoyable setting . . . This may lead to increased communication and cohesiveness† (Meredith, et al., p.77). This time that we spent together not only provided a few hours of fun, but it brought us closer as siblings. These experiences that bring us closer as a family can also bring us closer to deity and building a testimony of our own. Every day since time began, at least for me, my family has prayed together in the mo rning. Now I cannot leave my apartment until I have prayed because my parents taught me through that experience the importance of prayer. Christmas morning without balloons would be empty and depressing; those balloons helped my family bond. Family dinners without dad are lacking significance because when he was there we knew of our importance to him. Morning without prayer is not completely; those prayers helped me learn the gospel. There are so many benefits to wholesome family recreation that go unnoticed underneath all the fun. Before I started researching this topic, I did not think that having a testimony of recreation could be possible; testimonies were about tithing and the atonement. Now I realize that family traditions and rituals are an indispensable aspect of family life. I can say that I have a testimony in the importance of wholesome family recreation. When I start my own family, I want to continue and build new rituals so that we can build lasting and meaningful relationships. The Proclamation to the Family is incredibly insightful, who would have thought such a minor thing was really an ingredient to ha ving a successful family.

Lab: Determining What Type of Stimulus Info is More Easily Remembered Abstract A single subject study took place where a male, university student, willingly took part in helping determine what type of stimulus information is more easily remembered. The two types of stimulus introduced were meaningful (CVC) and randomized (CVC). The number of errors made among the two stimuli was also studied. This experiment was done using a computer generated program on verbal learning. Using this program, the subject was presented with seven items of stimuli (CVC) and was to remember what each stimuli was in the correct order. It was found that there are more correct responses when meaningful stimulus is used and the speed of responding to the stimuli is faster when a meaningful CVC is used, rather than in random fashion. Introduction Remembering is the retrieval of information, which is stored in memory. The act of remembering takes place when a correct response is given to a certain stimuli presented. Forgetting is a weakening of this stimulus-response relationship. The Purpose of this experiment is to determine what type of stimulus information is more easily remembered, be it in randomized manner or meaningful. When are more errors made in remembering the stimuli, among these two types of stimuli used (CVC). Also, when a correct response is given, which was the type of stimuli (CVC) that caused this to occur. The design of this experiment on verbal learning has both within-subject and between-subject variables. The within-subject variables are the words (CVC) that are stored in the computer which are the default words to be used. The between-subject variables are the number of stimuli used and the choice of the stimuli using the experimenters own words (CVC). The independent variable for this lab is the number of stimuli presented and the type of stimulus word (CVC) that was used, being both randomized and meaningful. The dependent variables are the number of errors made and the mean correct response latency (speed of responding). Number of errors will be highest in the randomized ordered stimuli, and the speed of responding will be slower in the randomized stimuli condition. Method A single subject, male, twenty years of age in first year of University volunteered to take part in this experiment on Verbal Behaviour. The apparatus used in this experiment was an IBM compatible computer, a monochrome monitor (non-colour), and a Raven dot matrix printer. Running on the IBM compatible was a computer generated program on Verbal Learning from which this experiment originated. Procedure: The first step in this experiment requires that the experimenter get the computer and program ready for the student. The computer, monitor and printer were to be turned on . When the computer was ready and flashing a cursor, Caps Lock was to be pressed, so all letters will be in capital form. The name of the program to be run (VL) was to be typed into the keyboard. When the program had loaded, a menu showed up on the screen, and Verbal Learning (selection 8) was to be run. A timing number was to be keyed into the computer (3.578) and then the Serial Learning feature was to be chosen (option 1). After the above steps, the rest of the experiment was entirely up to the experimenter. After the timing number was entered, the experimenter could either accept the default values for the parameters of the experiment already stored in the computer, or could change any of the parameters. For the first part of the experiment, the number of stimuli was changed (option 1) from ten to seven stimuli. The stimuli (CVC) used in this part of the experiment were in a randomized fashion. Listed below are the parameters for the first part of the experiment and the words (CVC) used : 1) Number Of Stimuli = 7 2) Inter-Trial Interval = 3 sec. 3) Maximum Stimulus Presentation Time = 5 sec. 4) Duration of Correct Answer Display = 5 sec. 5) Completion Criterion = 3 Totally Correct Trials. The Haber Process 1. The Haber Process During the first decade of the twentieth century the world-wide demand for ammonia for use in fertilisers (in the form of nitrates) and in the production of explosives for use in mining and warfare could only be satisfied on a large scale from deposits of guano in Chile (2). Though this deposit was of huge size (approximately five feet thick and 385 kilometres long) it represented a rapidly depleting resource when compared to world-wide demand. As a result of this there was much research into how ammonia could be produced from atmospheric nitrogen. The problem was eventually solved by Fritz Haber (1868 - 1934) in a process which came to be known as the Haber Process or the Haber - Bosch Process. Haber developed a method for synthesising ammonia utilising atmospheric nitrogen and had established the conditions for large scale synthesis of ammonia by 1909 and the process was handed over to Carl Bosch for industrial development (1). the reaction is a simple equilibrium reaction which occurs in gaseous state as follows; N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) = 2NH3 (g) heat of enthalpy = -92.6 kJ/mol In predicting how to obtain the highest yield from this reaction we must refer to Le Chatlier's Principle. This states that for an equilibrium reaction the equilibrium will work in the opposite direction to the conditions forced upon it. The conditions most pertinent to the above reaction are temperature and pressure. The pressure exerted by any gas or mixture of gasses in an enclosed space is directly proportional to the number of atoms or molecules of gas regardless of their size or molecular mass. Reference to the above reaction shows that, as the reaction moves to the right the number of molecules and hence the pressure decreases. Therefore the reaction moving to the right (i.e. towards the product required) is favoured by an increase in pressure. With regard to temperature, the reaction moving to the right is exothermic i.e. it gives off energy (in the form of heat). Therefore reference to Le Chatlier's Principle shows that the reaction to the right is favoured by low temperatures. However, when Haber placed the reactants together under these conditions it was shown that the rate of reaction was so slow as to render the process unfeasible as an industrial process. This is because of an unusually high activation energy. The activation energy of a reaction is the energy required by the reactants to achieve an intermediate state required before they form the products. In the case of the above reaction the intermediate state requires the dissociation of diatomic gaseous nitrogen. The triple bond found between two nitrogen atoms when they form diatomic nitrogen is amongst the strongest chemical bonds known. this leads to an extremely high activation energy. At extremely high temperature the nitrogen molecule will dissociate and so, as the temperature approaches this point the rate at which the reaction to the right occurs and therefore the speed with which equilibrium is reached increases rapidly. Unfortunately experimentation showed that, as temperature approached the point at which the speed of the reaction was sufficient to produce a viable reaction the amount of ammonia produced was so low that the reaction was still unfeasible on as an industrial process. Faced with this failure to find conditions suitable for an industrial process Haber began to experiment to find a catalyst that would facilitate the reaction. A catalyst is a substance that reduces the activation energy of a reaction, thus increasing the speed at which the reaction occurs, or in the case of equilibrium reactions the speed at which equilibrium is reached. After hundreds of experiments Haber discovered that a fast enough reaction with a high enough yield of ammonia would occur with a pressure between 200 and 400 atmospheres and at a temperature between 670K and 920K in the presence of a catalyst of iron (in the form of iron filings to increase its active surface area) plus a few percent of oxides of potassium and aluminium. This process was first demonstrated in 1909 and patented as the Haber Process in 1910 (3). In an effort to ensure equal opportunity for all employees it is my recommendation to the Board of Director’s that an affirmative action policy is fully implemented. The affirmative action policy should establish specific mandates that would guard against discrimination of any and all employees within the workplace. The policy would enforce that employees not be discriminated against based upon their race, sex, orientation, veteran status, disability, religion, and national origin. It is important that an industry such as this one implements guidelines that will protect its employees from unforeseen situations in the workplace such as sexual harassment and disc rimination. It will be the duty of the managers to make sure that the mandates that have been put in place are in fact enforced by each and every employee. The establishment of these types of rules will allow for a better workplace for the employees and will also possibly protect the business itself. Discrimination is not only a factor of affirmative action, but it also plays a distinct role in the regulations of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO). Equal Employment Opportunity is the legalized topic that protects individuals within the workforce from people who feel that they are going through situations at their employment based upon being discriminated against. The types of discrimination that individuals in the workplace could possibly go through would include discrimination against their gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, disability, and even their position within the workplace. Although affirmative action and equal employment opportunity have two different meanings, they both share the same importance. For example, an African American male can go into a company and apply for a position that he is well qualified for, the hiring manager of the company decides that does not feel that the candidate is fit for the position and is turned away. At that moment, if the African American male reasonably feels that he is being discriminated against based upon his race or even his gender then he could possibly have a case against the company. This type of scenario consists of not only affirmative action based upon the minority of the applicant, but it is also relate to equal employment opportunity because he feels that he was turned away based upon his race. Many companies do not realize the consequences that they face when an employee feels that they are being discriminated against or even harassed within the workplace. Not only can it lead to the company having to pay out thousands or even millions of dollars, but it can also damage the credibility of the company to its consumers and clients. It is important that this company as well as many others implement strategies in which they are able to educate their employees about the importance of equal employment opportunity as well as affirmative action. Companies should also post up information in regards to harassment within the workplace or even discrimination so that if an employee is having a problem then the company can try to resolve it themselves before the situation escalates to a more legal issue that is taken to court. This type of implementation will greatly protect the company from lawsuits as well as its credibility. Many companies feel that implementing affirmative action is not crucial to their company because of the fact that their company is diverse and they do not have those types of issues within their workplace whereas people are being discriminated against. For example, Wal-Mart is considered to be a very diverse company; however, they are the largest industry facing lawsuits due to discrimination against women employees, African American truck drivers; and numerous of other cases involving discrimination within the workplace. This proves that regardless of the type of company, implementing protection against discrimination in the workplace could possibly be beneficial to companies. In conclusion, I have detailed pertinent information in regards to why this company should consider implementing affirmative action within the workplace. I have addressed the importance of how the company can benefit from the implementation as well as protect its money, credibility, and most of all its employees, from being illegally discriminated against.
